Physical Intelligence is a new startup aiming to develop general purpose artificial intelligence software that can enhance the abilities of a wide variety of robots and machines.

By combining techniques from language and computer vision models with novel robotics training methods, the company hopes to overcome challenges that have limited progress in developing intelligent systems for the physical world.

“We aim to bring AI to the physical world with a universal model that can power any robot or any physical device basically for any application,” Chief Executive Officer Karol Hausman said.

With a team of robotics and AI experts and $70 million in funding, Physical Intelligence plans to purchase different robots and amass large datasets to train models that can bring more human-like capabilities to machines without being limited to specific hardware.

This universal approach could help robots gain new levels of intelligence from conceptual knowledge and allow physical tasks to be learned more efficiently, but significant research efforts will still be needed to fully realize this vision.

“I think it’s really cool what people are building with humanoids,” former Stripe executive Lachy Groom said. “But what fundamentally makes humans interesting is the brain, not our hardware. We are the ultimate generalists.”
