Vice President Kamala Harris and the Department of Justice celebrated the launch of a new National Extreme Risk Protection Order Resource Center, which will provide $750 million in funding to encourage more states to pass red flag laws.

Harris advocated for such laws during a speech at the site of the 2018 Parkland school shooting, arguing they allow communities to prevent potential tragedies by reporting concerns about individuals to authorities.

“Red flag laws are simply designed to allow communities a vehicle through which they can share, and have somewhere to share it, information about the concern about the potential danger or the crying out for help of an individual and then let’s give it to them before tragedy occurs. Part of why I am here today is to challenge every state to pass a red flag law,” Harris said.

Attorney General Merrick Garland said the center will help keep firearms from those deemed a threat.

“The launch of the National Extreme Risk Protection Order Resource Center will provide our partners across the country with valuable resources to keep firearms out of the hands of individuals who pose a threat to themselves or others. The establishment of the Center is the latest example of the Justice Department’s work to use every tool provided by the landmark Bipartisan Safer Communities Act to protect communities from gun violence,” Garland stated.

Neither Harris nor the DOJ acknowledged that California and Florida, which have had red flag laws for several years, still experienced some of the worst mass shootings and highest rates of “active shooter incidents” in 2021, calling into question whether such laws can reliably prevent gun violence as touted.
