Over two-dozen GOP House members blocked Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) from winning Speaker of the House for the third consecutive time, sending Republicans back to the drawing board.

Jordan ended with 194 votes, 16 shy of House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY).

It is uncertain whether or not Jordan plans to seek the gavel for a fourth time.

“Our plan this weekend is to get a Speaker elected to the House of Representatives as soon as possible so we can help the American people,” Jordan said.

House Freedom Caucus Chairman Scott Perry (R-PA) took to Jordan’s side, arguing that Jordan’s defectors don’t have clear reasons as to why they’re withholding votes.

“The right question is for these folks who are voting no on Jim Jordan is what is the real reason you’re voting no?” Perry pressed.

“They’re gonna tell their constituents that because Steve, who’s a good man, decided to drop out on his own, that it’s now Jim Jordan’s fault?” he added. “Let them go make that case.”

On Thursday, a Reuters photographer captured Jordan’s notes written on a piece of paper when he was leaving a meeting with his holdouts that read: “What is the real reason?”
