Former President Donald Trump is reportedly not supporting House Majority Whip Tom Emmer as a candidate for speaker of the House.

Trump has already endorsed Jim Jordan for House Speaker.

Trump has privately conveyed to allies that he does not back Emmer, who is an early frontrunner for the role.

Trump’s support is seen as crucial for any Republican seeking the speaker role.

Without total support from Trump, it is unlikely for a new speaker to be elected.

“If somebody is so out of step with where the Republican electorate is, where the MAGA movement is, how can they even be in the conversation?” Boris Epshteyn, a top Trump adviser, said.

“We need a MAGA speaker. That’s what it comes down to. Because if you look at the numbers, if you look at the energy, if you look at the heat, this is the Trump party, this is the MAGA party.”

“It is no longer the old-school khaki establishment Republican Party,” he said.

The Democrats are also facing challenges in electing their preferred candidate.

Currently, there is no clear path to 217 votes for any viable speaker candidate.
