First Lady Melania Trump opened the White House on Monday morning to unveil how she chose to decorate it for the Christmas season. This is an annual tradition for the first lady, which is often warmly received by members of the media.
The tree, the ornaments, the decorations—all of the decor—sharing a singular theme that resonates through each of the historic rooms of the White House.
Members of mainstream media are given a private tour of the newly decorated rooms and it is not irregular for the various outlets to publish articles about the decorations. While sometimes these articles are critical of the decorative designs or decisions, the Washington Post found something else to criticize: the first lady’s fashion.

Perspective: Melania Trump’s Christmas decorations are lovely, but that coat looks ridiculous https://t.co/7HieL5jRT6

In the Washington Post article, self-identified “fashion critic” Robin Givhan described the coat that Melania wore as “ridiculous” and said it was a “distraction.” Check it out:
For her tour, Mrs. Trump wears all white: a dress with a simple jewel neckline, white stiletto-heeled pumps and a white coat. The coat is draped over her shoulders as she strolls through the White House.
The coat looks ridiculous.
But more than a silly fashion folly, the coat is a distraction. It’s a discomforting affectation taken to a ludicrous extreme. In a video that is intended to celebrate the warmth and welcoming spirit of the holiday season, that simple flourish exudes cold, dismissive aloofness.
The critic continued:
The coat tossed over the shoulders is a generic styling maneuver. It’s often used in editorial photographs so that a model can show off the entirety of an ensemble, including what’s underneath the coat, because all of it has been thoughtfully coordinated. But even the most devoted fashion stylist realizes that at a certain point, when aesthetics start to overwhelm logic, when a flourish becomes a cliche, it’s time to retire it.
Twitchy reports that several people online commented that Melania has dazzled with various outfits during her time at the White House—often stealing her husband’s spotlight at events:

The WP cannot deny that the decorations are exquisite, so they have to be catty about what FLOTUS is wearing. #Patheic
